I need a second monitor for freelance graphic design running off my MacBook Pro. Not looking to spend a ton, probably $200 ish tops. Any one have some preferred brands or honestly any direction to go here? I’m not trying to spend a grand for 100% true color just something to make my home desk a bit easier to work from as I pick up more freelance jobs.

Ive worked with a few configurations of dual and external monitor... personally I find a single large monitor centered in the workspace to be best. Or perhaps a big one centered and a smaller one off the the side for holding reference windows, email, etc. If plasma is an option go for that, I’ve only seen it on TVs so far but it’s darks are wonderfully dark.

That’s sort of what I have at work. A large iMac with a secondary screen for reference and email stuff. The MacBook screen just isn’t quite big enough to solely work off of so I need something. The one at work was sent from corporate and is fine but for personal stuff I want to see if there is much of a difference out there

Wish I could throw my extra monitor your way, but its a work one. Its just sitting in my basement gathering dust.

Maybe you want to look into gaming equipment? They tend to be on about frame rate but color had got to be a concern too

See that’s something I wasn’t too sure of, seems like gaming monitors have a mark up in my limited searching just because of frame rate. I’m not doing any motion graphics so that’s not a huge concern

I’ve always like ThnkVision screens. Lenovo will sell you a 24" 1920x1080 IPS screen for $200. If you want more resolution they’ll do you a 2560x1440 24" IPS for like $270

We have a ton of extra at work that I just want to snag but it’s not exactly the proper thing to do.

Thanks I’ll take a look at those. Still very early in my searching

What size, resolution and inputs style are you looking for?
If color accuracy is truely a concern, it’ll cost you a bit more but there are a lot of IPS screens that are getting good color representation and not too pricy . Since it sounds like gaming isn’t an interest, just go for a 60hz refresh rate. Ultimately, I’d recommend 27 inch and 1440p, but watever you do, don’t get sucked into the large screens with low resolution. A 1080p screen should not be larger than 24" for daily computer use and as you go larger, the res needs to increase .
Are you using just a single computer plugged into this monitor? I ask because more and more productivity screens are coming with KVMs built-in.
Throw back some answer s to the above and I ’ll see if we can’t find a quality monitor for you, oppo-style.

Color accuracy isn’t huge as long as it’s close. I’ve dealt with normal Mac screens before so I know how those reproduce.
Usb-c out of the MacBook Pro but have hdmi connectors. 24-27 sounds about right as it’s basically a home work station for when I hook my laptop up to it and don’t want to be fully immersed in a 32 or anything. That just seems like overkill. Resolution wise, matching my laptop would be great, maybe slightly higher? I’ll have to check to see what that is since I’m on my mobile right now
I don’t even know what kvm is

In the past two years or so I have bought:
2x 24" Dells (U2415, though they just announced a new version). These are decent though I wish they were higher than 1920x1200
43" Dell (awful)
43" Philips (seriously the worst new screen I’ve seen in the past 20 years)
32" LG (this one is nice though at $500, it’s a bit more than you want to spend).
With your budget it shouldn’t be an issue to pick up some reasonable 27" 1440p display though.

That looks fantastic. I’m fully unaware of monitor specs and just deal with what I’m given at work so I quickly have got in over my head here.

I you’re thinking 24inch you’ll be able to get below the $200 @108 0p but usb-c will be more rare in that size. For a 27" @1440p you’ll struggle to find something new and name brand near $200ish, unless you find a great sale . You’ll also have a hard time getting usb-c at that price above 24".
Here’s a 27" 1440p ViewSonic with decent specs without usb-c, for $240.

Don’t forget that next week Amazon is having their annual Prim e Day sale and Black Friday-Cyber Monday is coming up too.
Good luck.

I’ve always been impressed with things from Dell’s UltraSharp line. They have pretty good color and uniformity. They also run forever - I have one that is like 12 years old and still kicking and see plenty around work that go forever so buying one a couple years old to get into your price range is reasonably safe .

I’m using a BenQ something or other 27 inch 1440p monitor that works great. I do all my photography edits on it.

I’ve been rocking the 27" version of this for a secondary monitor (which sees occasional amateur
photo editing) and have been really happy with it so far. The 24" version looks like it just squeaks in under $200.
